What you can do
Residents can have a lot of sway in what kinds of developments come to Hadley-and what developers must give in return for impacting our environment and quality of life. You can make a big difference by learning about new development (watch meetings on TV-5!), talking with your neighbors, and contacting your elected and agency officials. Letters are usually the best way to show you care. Here are some of the things you can do:
Write or call the Planning Board.

Ask the board to use their authority as highway commissioners and water commissioners to require studies of the costs of these projects to Town services. Send comments to:

Attend Town Meetings.
Town Meetings are held in the spring and fall (and when called for special issues) at Hopkins Academy High School. Hadley has an "open" Town Meeting where every registered voter has the right to speak and vote.
Contact the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission.
Urge this regional agency to get involved and be a stronger force for traffic and land use planning.

The Wal-Mart and Lowe's projects will soon submit environmental impact reports to the Mass. Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) office. Watch for these filings, and be ready to write letters during the 30-day comment period!
